What a transaction narration contains

A narration is the bank's compact description of a transaction. It may contain the payment rail, payee, masked account details, reference number and a bank-specific code. The exact order differs by bank, so treat codes as clues rather than a universal grammar.

Common payment codes

  • UPI: an instant payment made using a UPI app or handle.
  • NEFT: an electronic bank-to-bank transfer processed through NEFT.
  • IMPS: an immediate bank transfer, generally available around the clock.
  • RTGS: a real-time transfer commonly used for higher-value payments.
  • ACH or NACH: an automated recurring debit or credit such as an EMI, SIP or mandate.
  • POS or ECOM: a card payment at a terminal or online.
  • ATM or CASH WDL: a cash withdrawal.
  • REV or REVERSAL: a transaction returned or reversed.

Reference numbers and UTRs

A reference or UTR helps the bank trace a payment. Preserve it exactly when converting a statement to Excel. Spreadsheet software may round long numbers or remove leading zeroes, so store references as text rather than numeric values.

How to identify an unclear transaction

  • Search the narration for a recognisable merchant, initials or UPI handle.
  • Match the amount and date with receipts, messages or payment-app history.
  • Check whether a nearby reversal offsets it.
  • Use the official bank app or contact the bank through a verified channel if it remains unfamiliar.
